Done ... in the mail ... the March issue of Foodservice Monthly is on the way. On the cover you see one of Ocean City's top chef/restaurateur guys Gary Beach as he readies his newest endeavor Micky Fins. They reopen this weekend in time for the Ocean City Hotel Motel Restaurant Association Spring EXPO. The show is Sunday and Monday and FSM will be there all weekend with an eager mind set ready to believe Spring will come this year. Our booth is in the Lobby as you enter the main floor ... say hello if you're in town.
My Sauce on the Side column this month is about my three days working as a server over Valentine's Weekend helping out a friend in Vienna Va. at Cafe Renaissance. The story is the story but you might remember last month my printer partner at Silver Communications ran an ad for waiter pads after he saw an article in the Washington Post about servers and memories. Well, my memory is like a sieve and I used a pad as an essential tool while handling my station of five tables. I had just picked up a pad at a Navarra Spanish wine tasting Friday afternoon and it saved me on the floor. So maybe this old-fashioned tool is not so out of date.
Attached is my column ... my experience ... and yes, I made some money ... and no, I did not hurt their OpenTable.com customer ratings ... when I checked the other day they were #1 for service in the DC Va. burbs. And if you want a coincidence of immense proportions, the server featured in the WAPO story Richard Weber used to work for me in Columbus Ohio ... what are the odds of that?
