The problem with awards ... all awards (it just happens that last night was about the James Beard Foundation soiree) ... is that it ends up all about the winning. When you have five nominees, only one wins. At the end it looks like we have four losers for every winner.
Yet it really is an honor to be nominated and the evening should be about the celebration of all who work so hard in this crazy restaurant world.
So as you can see, I have my test opening shot of the backdrop ready for my fotos of DC winners. It didn't happen.
I'll have more later about the bizarro world Beard events behind the scenes as reported from my somewhat frenzied perspective ... but right now I have to get ready for another day and a dinner tonight in Annandale at a fundraiser for a culinary high school program that will provide a greater sense of satisfaction than last night.
But I can't go for my second cup of coffee this morning without talking about the best Twitter moment of the evening. I was standing in an empty press room at the beginning ... maybe two or three people ... and the tweet came through my iPhone from the Beard Foundation that the press room was overflowing already. I found the culprit in the backroom ... I think they had a dozen or so laptops humming ... and one of the young Beardites could only say, "Busted." So, is it a surprise to see "drama" tweets used to set the mood. Onward.

Thanks for sharing your tweets about the Beard Foundation soiree. A Washingtonian-at-heart and dedicated foodie I've been quietly following your blog for some time over the past few years! Keep up the great work!
