Dave McIntyre To Pen Post 'Wine' Column
(foto: Dave judging wine at an Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition) Former wine editor for Foodservice Monthly, soon to be former Washingtonian wine columnist Dave McIntyre will pen The Washington Post weekly column “Wine” beginning in October. Post Food Editor Joe Yonan confirmed today that McIntyre will write three or four columns per month and the current writers Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page will pen a monthly complementary piece.
Yonan said that if he were to try describe the McIntyre approach to wine in relation to scientific analysis or the romantic, Dave would “be more romantic.”
Dave McIntyre is well trained in the craft of wine, yet understands wine is more than a number on a scale – hence the appreciation of stringing words into a column that resonate with the reader. Yonan referred to a conversation he had recently with Terry Theise where the popular German wine importer said he thought it was time for wine not to be demystified, but that this is an opportunity to "remystify" wine in the way it captivates the senses.
I know I look forward to October and wish Dave well in his new endeavor.
side note: For a couple of years now, I participate in online surveys that The Washington Post uses to gauge consumer opinion. I was selected randomly, not as a writer. Recently, I was asked what I would think about a wine group being organized by the Post … would I go to special tastings? … would I pay? … would I be open to offers made to members? With the new Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli coming to the Post in September with some say is a mission to bring together the dot com element and the print division, I wondered out loud to Yonan if this marketing gem could be on the horizon. He wouldn’t comment. And all I can think of is … stay tuned.
